Local search, the directory maze:

I looked for a place to sell a used car, no longer running, you know, make a few bucks, and get it out of my lawn. I went online, searched through a few pages, and found nothing but a maze of dead ends!

This is why:

Most of the ads for the local salvage market, (and all the other types of business as well,) with the exception of one listing, the first two pages of search results were directory listings from somewhere other than East Texas.

Several things wrong with that picture:

1. Most searchers never search the same results any further than what they find on the first page.

2. Most searches stop after a couple of clicks. If someone types in a search phrase, and goes to the first page of results, they will find one of the directories for that word combination, and it will send them to another page, then another...

A normal search works like this:

1. Someone types in a phrase, say, "Tyler East Texas auto salvage yards."

2. They then look down a list of 10 links to sites containing those words.

3. They click on the one that looks most promising.

4. In our example, all of the listings are directories, which will require them to click again.

5. They click on another promising looking link, and this sends them to another page which may or may not have what they want.

6. In our example, we were redirected to another page, with more weeds and brambles, and nothing we were looking for.

7. At this point the average searcher gives up. At best they go back to start over, they got lost in the maze of confusing junk!

Getting out of the maze:

So, How do you get your business out of the maze? First, you have to be found, preferably early in the search. Next, you need to have very few steps between where the searcher starts, and where your information is found. This is where we come in!
